Malaysia's vision to encircle Borneo by rail, Laos planning railways to Vietnam and Savannakhet and Champasack, South Long Haul Rail Project in the Philippines, Thailand high-speed rail delays, proposed line from HCMC to Vietnam-Cambodia border
The Southeast Asia Railways Newsletter is a summary of rail news in Southeast Asia, edited by James Clark from Future Southeast Asia and Nomadic Notes.
Greetings from Kuala Lumpur! I arrived here by train from Butterworth, which is the best way to between Penang and KL.
Before Penang, I got the train from Hat Yai (Thailand) to Padang Besar (Malaysia), and then a train from Padang Besar to Butterworth. The border crossing by train is a more pleasant experience than crossing the border by road (here is my previous article about the border crossing). I have done this trip before by minivan, which I do not recommend. Minivans in Thailand pack as many seats inside as possible, so if you are tall you will be squished into the seat. Minivan drivers also have a repuation for driving like maniacs, so get the train instead!
While the border crossing is smooth, Padang Besar station could use some improvements. The station is cramped and there are too many stairs.
I’m going back to Vietnam this month, and I will be visiting some places I haven’t been to by rail. I’m putting together a guide for Vietnam train travel, so look out for that.
